Here are some factors to consider when buying a digital camera lens:

The Glass

• Focal Length - It is the actual distance in-between the focal lane of the lens and the rear element, measured in millimeters (mm). This is where the light’s parallel beams enter the lens converging onto a point. It determines the viewing angle of the lens. When there is a shorter focal length, the field of view becomes wider, providing more scenes for your camera to capture. When you increase the focal length, the actual field of view becomes narrower.

• Aperture - It is one of the mechanisms that control the actual “amount of light” passing through the lens towards the image sensors. It is also referred as “f-stops,” like f/2/8. The smaller the number, the larger the opening. This means more light enters the camera. Since it begins to collect additional light, a type of lens that allows you to open to a wider aperture also enables you to have a faster shutter speed. Such feature is essential in low lighting conditions to obtain sharp images, especially through a handheld camera.

• Image Stabilization - Slower shutter speed can result to blurry photos when cameras are handheld. Image stabilization counteracts the shaking, allowing one to shoot certain handheld shots amidst low lighting conditions. Canon’s term for this is IS (Image Stabilization). Nikon use the term VR (Vibration Reduction).

Getting started in aerial photography. To get started in aerial photography, it is not as difficult as it may initially seem. In most cases, having access to an aircraft of some sort is required. However, there are literally thousands of pilots that are willing to charter a flight for you to accomplish your work. Check with your regional or local airport about chartering a flight for photography. Let them know what and where you are interested in photographing, and they should be able point you in the right direction. Based on my experience, be prepared to pay $100-$300 per hour chartering a fixed wing aircraft, depending on your area and the type of aircraft available. For helicopter rentals, look to pay about 30% more.

Best time of day to take aerial photographs. As with most types of outdoor photography, early morning and late afternoon time frames will yield the most pleasing photographs. It is at this time that the sun’s rays produce warmer colors and longer shadows which produce more brilliant colors and beautiful shadows. The longer shadows associated with this time frame add depth to your photographs, by better defining the contours of land or structures.

There are now various options in storing pictures besides printing them and keeping them in hard photo albums. A great option would be through the use of CDs. A user can simply save their files in CD’s and just label them to keep it organized. With DVD-Rs now coming up, they are able to save up to 4GB worth of memory. This should be enough to hold at least 1000 pictures, all in high resolution.

Look for a comfortable setting where you will do the shoot, your pet must be comfortable and familiar to the place so they will not feel afraid. If it is an outdoor setting, you may bring their favorite toy or blanket so even if they are outside their territory, seeing their things make them feel comfortable and relaxed.

Plan what kind of photo you want for your pet, you must know what time, place and mood of your pet before doing the shoot. You may want a picture of a pet that is sleeping or a pet that is running around playing to a ball.
