How the Best SLR Cameras Work

Posted February 5th, 2009

If you don’t know what a digital SLR camera is, you’re not the only one. In most cases, people know only about compact digital cameras, since those are used by most amateurs. In this article, I’ll try helping you a bit, by offering some information about digital SLR cameras and how they work.

Just like cell phones have inundated our lives, small compact cameras are everywhere now. It’s not the same with digital SLR cameras, which were used only by professionals until a few years ago.

What’s great about the quick advancement of technology is that the cost of buying a digital SLR has decreased a lot, and their prices are similar with those of compact cameras in the high end. Since more people can buy them now, they also need to know more about how they work.

The definition of a SLR

The meaning of the SLR acronym is Single Lens Reflex.

While you know what SLR means, you probably don’t have any idea what it actually does.

1. The output of the lens is what you actually see

2. You’re able to chance the digital SLR lenses

3. The photo quality is much better because of the large image sensors

4. The lag time is almost zero, so action photography is done easily.

What I’m trying to say is that digital SLR’s are versatile cameras.

When you have a digital SLR camera, you can take photos of anything you want, and the photos will be great each time.

The digital SLR mechanics

Here I’ll try to explain a bit how a digital SLR camera works.

1. After the light goes through a lens, it hits the mirror

2. Then the light is sent on a focusing screen

3. After the focusing screen, the light goes to the pentaprism (a block of glass)

4. From the block of glass, the light goes to the viewfinder so you can see it.

5. Taking a photo means that the mirror is flipping, with the shutter opening and exposing the sensor to the light.

Basically, this means that you get exactly what you see. You can adjust the focus and compose the image by using a viewfinder.

While you would hope that you get the exact image that you see in a viewfinder, in most cases you will get something completely different.

Reading the reviews that come with digital SLR cameras will fill your ears with information about viewfinder brightness and coverage.

Getting the perfect SLR camera, is never an easy thing, especially with the way digital technology is constantly changing. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful websites online, that can narrow down your search and help you find the DSLR camera with all the features important to you.
