Wildlife Photography With a Digital Camera

Posted February 24th, 2009

Taking pictures of wildlife is really interesting and at the same time challenging too since most of the time the animals won’t be in a position in which you really want them to be in. Moreover, it is often very difficult to capture a clear picture of a moving animal.

In short, there are lots of hurdles to taking artistic wildlife pictures with your digital camera, but if taken properly, these pictures could be the most appealing and memorable pictures you have ever taken. There are many tips for wildlife photography with your digital camera, out of which, some important and useful tips are:

  • Make sure that you don’t scare the animal and at the same time you also should not get scared by their movements and actions (talking about carnivorous animals).
  • Remember that you are using a digital camera and you need not to go closer to the animal since your digital camera comes with great optical and digital zoom. Try to use your zoom in order to get more details.
  • Don’t get a single snap. Try to get as many snaps as possible in order to compensate for any unwanted picture.
  • You can only get your desired position of the animal if you have patience.
  • If you are taking the pictures of fast moving objects then it is always recommended to use a fast shutter speed.
  • While taking a picture of your pet, one way to keep your pet in one particular position is to offer it some pet food.
  • Using flash is not recommended since it might scare the animal.
  • Some digital cameras make a good healthy sound of the shutter while taking pictures. Mute all the camera sounds or it might cause your subject to move away quickly
  • Always follow the basic rules when you are in wildlife for your own safety and for the safety of the animal. Never get too closer to them and never offer them any food. You can get closer to them and give them food if they are your own pets.
  • In order to reduce the reflection of light, particularly near water in the wildlife, use polarizing filters.
  • Don’t be afraid of blurs because sometimes a blurred picture looks more attractive than other crystal clear pictures.
  • Try to take pictures from different angles as it might give you one or two most attractive pictures.
