4 Reasons to Buy a DSLR
Posted November 12th, 2010
Although many people purchase point and shoot cameras each year, there are some people who want to learn more about photography and need a camera that will enable them to learn. These are the people who would probably benefit from considering a DSLR camera. This camera is more expensive than a point and shoot, and more difficult to use, but it also enables you to grow and experiment with photography much more than a point and shoot model will. There are many advantages to DSLR cameras that justify the higher price for people who want to get serious about photography as an amateur or as a professional. A DSLR camera will allow you to grow and do much more as a photographer. Most cameras have a wide range of settings from fully automatic to full manual. Using a DSLR in full manual setting enables you to control all of the camera’s settings. This includes shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, along with white balance and zoom. Learning to control all of these settings takes knowledge and practice, but once you learn the basics it enables you to do things with your photographs that would be impossible to do with a point and shoot camera. Anyone who is seriously interested in photography will learn much more with the increased capabilities of a DSLR camera. A DSLR camera also offers much more flexibility than a point and shoot camera. This is because DSLR cameras offer interchangeable lenses. Each different lens that is attached to a camera has different capabilities. Some lenses have a very long zoom. Other lenses can offer very wide or shallow depth of field. Other lenses can provide the photographer with a very fast shutter speed or the ability to magnify objects to many times their original size. This degree of flexibility is simply not available to someone who is using a point and shoot camera. Although the variety of lenses is part of what makes these cameras more expensive, many photographers find that they have one or two favorite lenses that offer the most versatility. A DSLR camera is a long term investment. Because they are more expensive than point and shoot cameras most photographers keep them for a much longer period of time. Many photographers start with a basic DSLR body and several lenses. When they are ready, they often upgrade the body of the camera and keep the lenses. When you purchase a DSLR camera you are also purchasing access to an entire family of lenses and capabilities. In addition, a DSLR is an investment in your future as a photographer, whether you want to be a professional or just enjoy the hobby. Again due to their higher cost, DSLR cameras do not get outdated as quickly. The technology now is such that an entry level DSLR will last for many years. Point and shoot cameras, on the other hand, get outdated quickly by cameras with better zoom and more megapixels. For a camera that will grow with you for many years, DSLR is definitely the better choice. Milos has been an online writer for nearly 2 years now.
