The Canon 7D Video Technical Overview
Posted August 19th, 2011
One of the key features that advanced amateurs and budget conscious professionals buyers look for in today’s digital SLR is high-definition of HD video capture. Making it more interesting is the fact that they can combine the usage of lenses for both still and video shooting with the same body. Unfortunately, most cameras have control and format limitations; that is until the introduction of the Canon EOS 7D with its Canon 7D video mode. Canon has taken the feedback from its customers seriously and has come up with the robust Canon EOS 7D that incorporated many of their wishes; especially for the video mode including the ability to have more control over how they shoot their movies and record audio from an external source. Manual control of the shutter and aperture, multiple frame rate options, continuous autofocus during video recording are some of the features available in the Canon 7D video mode. The 7D’s all-new CMOS sensor allows shooting video with the EOS 7D to record high-definition video at the maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The Canon dSLR video can be recorded and output to both NTSC modes of 23.976 or 29.97 frames/second and PAL modes of 23.976 or 25 frames/second at full resolution. If you wish to, you can also down-sample in-camera to produce lower resolution movies for both the NTSC and PAL formats which matches the television broadcast formats with any necessary conversions after video capture. Movies are recorded as MOV files in the Canon 7D videos. This format uses less space than the JPEG format but does not suffer the severe image quality loss like those stored in AVCHD when you change a significant amount of the image content between frames. You can manually focus the lens during a recording. The good news with focusing for video is that you can get quite a good depth of field in video mode by stopping the lens down. This is due to the relatively low resolution of the video image. You have a choice of either automatic or manual exposure in the Canon 7D video mode. In the Auto mode, to keep things simple, the camera simply just adjusts the shutter speed and aperture as needed for a correct exposure. It is possible for you to simultaneously control the shutter speed, aperture and ISO and doing this gives you the ability to control depth of field or freeze actions; thus giving you significantly more creative control over your videos. External audio can be recorded via attaching your microphone to the camera’s microphone jack. However the EOS 7D also has its own internal microphone. You can also disable audio recording if you wish to do so. Canon has listened to its customers and provided many new and enhanced features that makes taking video via the Canon 7D video mode a breeze as well as enabling you to show your creative talents in shooting interesting movies that can rival those produced by a much more expensive professional camera. This has made the Canon EOS 7D a camera of choice amongst those who are serious in taking stills as well as videos. Taking HD videos via the Canon 7D video mode with its new enhanced features and controls will undoubtedly unleash the creative artistic genius in you.
