Composition Fundamentals That Can Improve Your Digital Photos

Posted August 10th, 2009

The best way to improve the quality of your online digital photo prints is to simply send in better photos to be printed. Most amateur photographers do not take the time to learn the basic of good photography and continually make the same fundamental mistakes in composition. It really is not that difficult once you understand a few guidelines. After reading this article, you should be able to take professional-looking photos that will impress your friends and family.

Composition refers to how you arrange the visual elements in your photograph. The first rule of good composition is the rule of thirds. You should approach each photo as a grid that is split into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. Imagine a tic-tac-toe gameboard laid over the top of your picture. You never want to place the primary subject of the photo in the center square. This is often counter-intuitive for beginner photographers because you would expect to be focusing on that subject. In reality, you get much better effects by slightly offsetting the subject and using items in the background to fill out the image.

When planning out your shots, it is better to use as many background elements as you can find. Experiment with the best layout for these elements, moving the photo’s subject around into different thirds of your grid. Digital cameras are great for trying out all the options like this because you can just check the preview to see if a certain composition looked good or not. You no longer have to waste money developing poor quality pictures, just delete the bad ones and try something else.

Of course, if the background elements will be distracting to your viewer, they should be eliminated from view or cropped out of the final image. If you have no way to avoid including them in the picture, try to at least keep them toward the outside of the frame. This will make it easier to remove them later when you are using the online photo printing site’s online editing tools.

If there are linear elements in the background, such as fences, trails, or roads, these can be used to lead the viewer’s eye right into your photo. This often works best when placed at a diagonal across the entire picture and can produce some stunning effects. Taking the picture while standing in the middle of the road or along the fence will also add some interesting visual touches to your digital photo.

After you have found the best composition and taken your digital photo, it is time to clean up the image and crop any unnecessary objects. Think about whether there is anything in the field of vision that does not belong there or will distract the viewer from the photo’s main focus. Once you have cropped these out, it is time to send the photo off to your choice of online photo printing sites for processing and delivery.
