How to Create the HD Video Look Without the Cost of HD
Posted September 23rd, 2009
A number of people ask me “how do I create a HD look for my videos without actually shooting HD?” Notice the word “look”. What people are actually saying is how can they get the wide screen look of HD, for play back. This is simple to do and uses a budget well under the normal amounts required to produce a HD video. The secret is in the type of cameras that you use and their availability to shoot a wide screen picture. Lots of older standard definition cameras have this ability and this is the first step to creating the look of HD. SD records at 480i and HD records at 720p, 1080i or 1080p. First make sure that all the cameras are able to shoot wide screen in SD. Use cameras like the Panasonic AG-DVX100B and add a little 24p for effect! Next, look closely at the lighting and if needed add a couple of fresnels to increase the lighting luminance on the set you are using and then shoot the video. In editing the video, use virtually no compression so that you are not creating any loss. I realize that this adds a lot more space to the record drive but by the time it is transferred to DVD it looks great. For additional costs you can upgrade the finished video and run it on Blue Ray. If you really look close - no it was not HD but on a Plasma or LCD screen it still looks very clean and good.
