Digital Photographers - Is No One Visiting Your Cool New Website? Part 1

Posted October 13th, 2009

You’ve got your digital photography website up and running, and boy it looks great. Nice flash presentations and a selection of your funkiest images to show off. A navigation menu that allows the viewer to explore your best work in a click of a mouse. But wait. What viewer?

OK so your friends and colleagues (Facebook friends too) all rocked up for a personal viewing and everyone was impressed. Great photos! You did well. You finally got your own website online. Now you’ve got to get more traffic (viewers) and quickly… But how?

The funny thing is that this situation happens more than you’d believe. The ‘look and feel’ factor takes more priority than ‘who will see the site.’ Marketing and promoting your photo site? What’s that? Getting folks to visit and getting ranked in the search engines? Er…

There’s a couple of things to do right now if you’re reading this and thinking ‘yep, that’s me.’ Firstly you can do some basic keyword research and work out what keywords might suit your website and location best. A quick example might be ‘portrait photographer New York’ or ‘landscape photography Delray Beach Florida.’

Another thing you can do is to make sure you have some of the keywords on your web pages, preferably in your H1 and H2 tags, in the title of your website, and throughout the page. Normally you’d use one specific keyword for each page on your photography site.

We’ve barely scratched the surface here but at least if you start to think about some of these and look how other digital photography websites use keywords on their pages, plus pretend you were someone looking for your own site, you should get a better understanding for how it all works. Enjoy the (learning) adventure!
