Digital Photographers - Is No One Visiting Your Cool New Website? Part 2

Posted October 14th, 2009

Sometimes you’ll look at a digital photography website and be immediately impressed with the layout and presentation. The photos are stunning, the navigation takes you wherever you want to go, and they’ll take care of your order and frame the photo as well. It’s the perfect photo site. But is it really?

Well, not always. The thing is that you can have a terrific and expensively designed photo site but if it’s not getting visitors or finding itself ranking well in the search engines, then forget it. You may as well stand outside your home handing out business cards with your website plastered on them and hope folks pay a visit.

What you need to do is allow yourself to think through what you’re on about (Ie. what photography styles you specialize in) before you go build the site. If you’ve already made your photo site then you have to think about ways to get folks visiting.

Either way, this stuff is essential because it’ll give you the fuel to know exactly what makes your photography site unique and once you know that you can focus your marketing efforts around it. For example, if you specialize in abstract photography then write articles about that, or create ‘how to’ videos for YouTube on the same theme.

So you really do need to know your unique angle and what makes ‘your stuff’ different to all the other photographers out there. And you need to keep an open mind about marketing your site, or at least, hire a student or friend who will go out there and push hard to get links, do press releases, or social bookmarking etc for your site.

Do this and your digital photography site will have more visitors (and customers) than ever before!

Martin has been writing articles for nearly 3 years. His latest website over at photography lighting kits gives advice about photography backgrounds for photographers who want to start up their home photography studio or product photography business.
