Green Screen Imaging

Posted March 30th, 2011

Green screen compositing has expanded its reach to include computer and video imaging. There are numerous mysteries attached to the execution of green screen imaging successfully.

What is it all about?

Earlier it had been termed as ‘blue screen’ compositing but with time it has shifted to ‘green screen’. The broader terminology that had been opted is the ‘traveling matte composite’, but not many seemed to have given nod to it. So to refer it, green screen technique is what could be spoken of here. The process initiates with photography of a subject standing in front of well-lit backdrop that is all in green color. The process of compositing, no matter photo-chemical or digital, is able to replace all the space in green with an image or background picture with the one wants to be used and this is known as background plate. The composites could be created optically for movies or still photographs with the help of hardware for live videos and also by making use of digital programs so as to composite in-motion and motionless images. Till the duration of 1990s, a majority of green screen movies would be composited optically and so was done for television. Although next to green is the color blue which could be used but there are rest as well. Green is the most common of all and at times even red is utilized for some special occasions. The term Chroma Key is as well used for the similar procedure.

Work process- It is based on the luminance key and it is one where everything in the image, its brightness levels are set in keys along with other color generators. This process works pretty well with titles. There could be troubles with clothing of a subject as there are many luminance tones. Shoes, hair and shadow regions could be very dark whilst skin, eyes and shirt collars could turn out to be 100% white. The technology creates keys on a single color channel. The color green which is used has many benefits to offer. The reflection level in green color is better which is why converting it into matt becomes easy.

Myself webmaster of 123videomagic.com providing video editing software, chromakey software helps in green screen imaging by replacing background, giving special effects as per your needs.
