Black and White Photography - How to Take Great Images

Posted June 13th, 2009

As someone who is inspired by taking photographs, you most likely obsess over black and white photography. There just is something fascinating about this form of photography that can really change our views on the object. Although you are taking out the colors in the photo, you still are left with so many different feelings about it. The images look simple yet extremely complex at the same time. Because there are so many things you can do with this type of shooting, there are ways in which you can elevate your skills to the next level so you get great shots every time.

The first thing you have to do when it comes to getting better black and white photography is to practice. The reason you have to do this is because your photography mind is so used to looking at the colors for inspiration. With this, you have to look for contrast and tone and at the same time you have to be able to block out the color that can get distracting. It might take some time to train your brain to do this because it is completely opposite of what you typically do, which is why you need to practice.

Another way you can get great black and white photography images is by focusing on the contrast of light and dark. Without the color to distract our eyes, we will focus our eyes more on the light intensity. If you are able to find scenes that have an existing great contrast between light and dark shadows, you will get an impressive black and white photograph. You also will want to find images that have great texture to them because they will add light contrast.

The next tip for getting great images in black and white photography is for digital cameras. Because your camera comes with a black and white setting, many people are tempted to use it. However, you will get a better image if you shoot in color. The reason you should do it this way is because your camera will shoot the image in color anyway, and then change it to black and white. By waiting and changing it with editing software, you will have more flexibility. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is take the same photo twice, once with the setting on and once with it off and see the difference.
