Image Hosting - What is it?

Posted December 24th, 2009

Many people really enjoy taking pictures. And seeing those pictures in a slideshow is truly delightful. So when people take pictures, they usually upload the pictures on their computer. But if you have a lot of files on your computer, you’ll eventually have low disk space. When this happens, you can no longer upload your pictures on the computer. What will you do?

One thing that many people do is to burn the images on a CD or a DVD. CDs and DVDs do provide a good amount of storage, but are susceptible to damage. So if the CDs and DVDs get scratched, you might no longer be able to view your pictures. So this is certainly not the best option. What is the best option for you? Image hosting can help you there.

An image hosting service, or photo hosting service, lets you upload your photos over the internet. The host will then store the photos you uploaded on their server. Once your images have been uploaded on the host’s website, the pictures will be available to the public. This service is the best option for you since you can view all your pictures on your computer by simply accessing the internet. Photo hosting service has become quite popular, as the demand for such services continuously grows.

While the photo hosting service sounds ideal, it does have limitations. The host has restrictions on the maximum image size and the maximum bandwidth or capacity allowed per user. You can easily follow the image size restriction by editing the image size on Paint or other image editing programs. The maximum bandwidth, on the other hand, is limited as to how much you can pay. The host lets you choose hosting packages that vary in bandwidth and price. But if you can’t afford such a service a free photo hosting service is available.

Free photo hosting lets you upload your photos and make them available to the public. This is great for people who can’t afford the paid photo hosting service or for people who only need to upload a few photos.

So if you want to get your pictures hosted, you have to choose between the free photo hosting service and the paid image hosting service. What are the key differences? Let’s find out.

One main difference of the two is that a free photo hosting allows a smaller image size. This means that you can either upload only small images or edit large images to make it meet the size requirement. So if you have large images and want to upload it in its original size, then you should choose the paid iamge hosting service.

Another key difference between the two is the additional features. Paid photo hosting service lets you create galleries in which you can add your photos to a slideshow. You may also add notes and comments on the photos you uploaded. Such features are not available on free photo hosting although some free iamge hosting websites allow such features for a cost.

Now that you know the differences between the two types of image hosting, you can now choose which of the two is the best for you.
