Lens Filters

Posted December 16th, 2010

If you are, or are considering becoming, a professional photographer than you should definitely look into purchasing some camera lens filters. Camera lens filters are an important piece for any photographer as they have many uses when it comes to digital photography. If you are new to photography and wish to learn more about lens filters than you have come to the right place. Throughout this article we will discuss what lens filters are, as well as different types of filters available for purchase.

As said previously, lens filters are an essential accessory for any serious photographer. Not only do they reduce glare, improve the saturation of photographs, and provide extra protection for your camera’s lens, but they also allow you to create special effects that cannot be created with other digital editing techniques. To help us better understand lens filters, let’s discuss the different filter types and the effects that can be obtained by using each of them.

The first type of lens filters that you may consider purchasing are ultraviolet and skylight filters. These filters are generally used to protect your camera from things such as UV rays, moisture, dust, fingerprints, and scratches. These filters are great even for non-professional photographers because they help to prevent your lens from becoming damaged or broken. If you wish to purchase an Ultraviolet or skylight filter make sure you buy one that is multi-coated to ensure the best quality.

Another type of filter is the polarizing filter. Polarizing filters not only protect your camera from being damaged, but also help to reduce reflections that can be caused from water, glass, or angles. When purchasing a polarizing filter, make sure to get the right type (either linear or circular) for your camera. Failure to do so can result in damage to your camera.

If you shoot a lot of outdoor photographs in the sunlight than you may consider purchasing a neutral density filter. These filters allow you to reduce the amount of light moving through the lens without changing the color of the photograph.

If you are looking to correct colour of your photographs than you may wish to purchase a coloured filter. These filters are great for shooting or editing black and white photographs.

If you are looking to add effects to your photographs you may consider purchasing an infrared filter. These filters only allow infrared light to enter the lens, creating surrealistic effects for photographs. There are also many other filters available for those of you who like to play with special effects. These include, star filters, cross screen filters, soft screen filters, fog filters, and intensifier filters.

If you are, or are considering becoming, a professional photographer, it is suggested that you try out at least a few of the different types of lens filters. Purchase your lens filters today to protect your camera lens and create fun effects for your photographs!
