Some Common Pitfalls With Maternity Photos

Posted September 2nd, 2010

In maternity photography, there are some common issues that can bedevil your efforts and cause your images to look pedestrian and amateurish. Fortunately, they are easy to spot and even easier to prevent.

Backdrops in the studio:
Keep in mind that textured backdrops, such as muslin can create an interesting visual, but in general, seamless paper gives a more professional look. Also be aware that the color of the backdrop you choose can swallow up your model’s details, such as a black background with a dark haired maternity model. That can sometimes work well if you use an extra spotlight to highlight her hair. While black felt provides an excellent, professional looking background, if you’re using a dark background, be sure and adjust your lighting.

Lighting: On camera flash DON’T DO IT

Stale poses:
Don’t fall into the trap of stale boring poses. While the ubiquitous hands-clasped-over-the-belly photo is a classic, this is an exciting time in your mom-to-be model’s life, so don’t be afraid to be creative and use imaginative or unexpected poses (as long as your maternity model is comfortable, physically and emotionally, of course.) Props, fabrics, outdoor settings can all add excitement. Most important, ask for her input.

Poor Composition:
Consistently putting your maternity model in the middle of the frame is boring. Remember to use the Rule of Thirds: Dividing the frame into thirds with imaginary lines and aligning the subject with those imaginary lines gives your image better harmony.

Distracting Wardrobe:
Keep in mind that wild patterns and crazy colors can overwhelm the shape of the belly and draw the eye and focus away from your maternity model. Remember, it’s maternity photography and while a bold pattern can help to accentuate the belly in an interesting way, it can often be a distraction, so be aware. Also consider using contrasting colors and backgrounds: an off white shirt or light colors on a black background, or vice-versa, can be bold and interesting.

By avoiding some of these common pitfalls, your maternity photography shoots should yield exciting results that moms-to-be will be proud to display!
