Monopod Vs Tripod - How to Choose the Right Camera Support
Posted June 27th, 2009
It can be a difficult task trying to figure out if you should buy a tripod or a monopod to help improve your photography. In this article i shall discuss the merits and disadvantages of both and will hopefully help you formulate a better understanding of which one is best for you. If you are unsure which one to buy then this article should help you decide.
The first thing to understand in the monopod vs tripod debate is that they are very different beasts. Though they do pretty much the same thing (help you keep your camera and lens still while shooting) they are designed for different uses and applications. Before choosing which one you should buy you first need to work out what kind of photography make up the majority of your work.
Monopods are designed to be portable. They are usually smaller and more light weight than tripods making them far easier to carry around with you whether you are out on a shoot or simply strolling around on holiday. Their main advantage apart form their weight is that they can be assembled in a matter of seconds allowing you to quickly set up your shot and take the frame before the scene changes.
Tripods are designed to be static and not moved around too much. They can take a few minutes to set up and take down and generally do not fold down small enough to tuck inside your camera bag. As a result they are best suited to static situations such as macro photography, photo shoots in a studio or posed portraits.
