How to Purchase a New Digital Camera

Posted November 9th, 2010

With the prices constantly dropping and the technology becoming more and more advanced, many people are considering purchasing a new digital camera. There are literally hundreds of cameras on the market ranging from basic point and shoot models to top of the line DSLR cameras, and everything in between. When it comes to choosing and purchasing a new digital camera, the options can feel overwhelming. If you are considering purchasing a new digital camera, here is a process that will assure that you will be happy with your decision.

First of all, consider why you want a new camera. Do you simply want to be able to pull it out and take a few pictures? Are you interested in photography as a hobby or career and interested in learning more? Do you want a basic camera, a camera with more zoom, or a DSLR camera? Do you also want your camera to be able to capture video? Thinking about what you want your camera to do will help you to narrow down your choices. If all you want is a basic camera there is no real reason to purchase an expensive DSLR. On the other hand, if you are interested in photography as a hobby and you want to learn more, then you will quickly max out the capabilities of a point and shoot and would do better to consider a DSLR.

Once you have an idea of what type of camera will best suit your needs, think about your budget. There are many quality point and shoot cameras available for under $200. However, if you are set on a DSLR even an entry level model will cost at least $450 or more for lenses. If your budget is very limited you may want to wait and save money until you can afford a camera that is closer to what you really want. Although there are many cameras available in a lower price range, spending just a little bit more money will often get you much more flexibility and capability.

By the time you have thought about your budget and what you want out of a new camera, you will probably have narrowed your choices down to a few top contenders. When you reach this point, it is time to visit a store. Even if you plan to purchase your camera online there is no substitute for actually holding a camera and using it. Picking up and using several different cameras will help you to figure out which features are most important and which camera will be the right choice for your needs.

Once you have figured out which camera you want, now is the time to price shop. Visit several electronics stores either online or in person and note which store has the best price on your camera. Check out Amazon or another online retailer and see what their price is as well. While you are there, read some of the user reviews for the camera and make sure they line up with what you want. Once you’ve shopped around for the best price, purchase your camera knowing that you have made the right decision for your situation.

Lastly, make sure that you use your camera once you have purchased it. The single best way to improve your photography skills is to take more pictures. Taking pictures frequently will help you to learn to see and think like a photographer, and you will be surprised by how much better your pictures will be.
