5 Useful Tips for Photographing High School Seniors

Posted September 12th, 2010

The photography industry is competitive. Most professional photographers survive and thrive because they choose a niche and brand their business with that niche in mind. One growing niche is the male senior boy portrait market. This article offers some photography business tips for those wishing to succeed at shooting male senior portraits.

  1. Send an email which describes how to prepare for a session. For many male seniors, this will be their first photography session that is not under the direction of their Mom and Dad. Without explicit directions on how to prepare and what to bring the session will not be as productive as it could be.
  2. Offer quick, simple, inexpensive mini-sessions. Senior boys typically do not put as much stock in photography as do their female counterparts. Additionally, on average they do not spend as much on their portraits. Thus, if a senior photographer is going to succeed in this business, he needs to develop a business model that takes a typical boy’s preferences into account. If the does he can create a profitable and rewarding niche.
  3. When it comes to marketing high school senior sessions, Facebook is your friend. High School seniors, both boys and girls, spend a significant amount of time on Facebook. If you are going to reach this crowd, you need be there as well.
  4. Use students in their junior year as model reps. Find a popular high school junior. Shoot his portrait early on in his junior year. Give him a cut of all of the sales made by clients that came to you through his recommendation.
  5. Request that your client bring props they feel help communicate their interests and while in high school. If they bring these props, they will enjoy a more personalized session.

The male high school senior portrait market is growing. Take a photography business tip from an experienced portrait photographer: don’t neglect the male market when building a high school senior portrait business.
