How to Take Better Pictures - 8 Simple Tips to Hone Your Photography Skills

Posted May 20th, 2011

If you love to take photographs or you are a beginner in photography and you want to hone your skills in taking better photographs, you can actually start learning simple tips and techniques. Expert photographers are not born overnight. In fact, they too, started by learning some simple tips and techniques.

Here are some tips and techniques that you might find useful if you want to learn how to take better pictures.

1. Familiarize yourself with your equipment. Knowing your equipment plays a big role in getting the best photo you can. Of course, you have to know which camera setting can produce great pictures in low light or in places where there is direct sunlight or if you want to take a picture of something that is too close to you.

2. Do not face the sun when taking pictures. This will cast a shadow on your subject’s face.

3. Choose the background of your picture. This pretty seems basic but if you forget this, you will end up ruining the entire photo. Branches of trees that may look like your subject’s horn, or background colors that do not match your subject’s color combination, and many other distracting backgrounds should be taken into consideration when taking photos.

4. Try other angles that are not at the usual eye level. Most often, we tend to take pictures standing in front of our subject. If you want more dramatic effect, try other angles that can result to a more dramatic photograph.

5. Learn how to take good pictures even in low light. One of the challenges of photography is taking pictures in low light. Taking good pictures of caves or other indoor places where there is limited lighting can be done by knowing your camera, learning about ISO and adjusting your camera settings so that it can still take better pictures even in dark places.

6. Experiment on how to capture photos of moving subjects. Especially if you are a sports enthusiast who loves to take pictures of sports action, or moving subjects, you may want to capture that blur that shows motion and this can be done by proper shutter speed settings as well as experimentation.

7. Take more shots as you can. In this age of digital photography, you don’t have to limit yourself when it comes to taking pictures. One tip to taking great pictures is to take a good number of shots. The more pictures you take, the more great shots you can choose from.

8. Learn how to take photos when there is too much harsh sunlight. Especially if you can’t choose the time of day that you are about to take pictures, you have to adjust the contrast control of your camera if it has one. Most cameras at this point will automatically shut off the flash but keep in mind that if you are close to the subject, you may want to manually turn on the flash to get some fill light.

In these times that people would love to post beautifully captured photos in their social networking accounts, it also helps to learn a few tips and techniques on how to take better pictures. This way, you can really get impressive photos.
