10 Top Portrait Photography Tips For Family Portraits

Posted May 21st, 2010

Capturing moments in time is precious to us all. Time seems to pass by so quickly and its only when you look back on photos or home videos, that you realise that time has passed by at an amazing speed.

Going for a fun family portrait session is an opportunity to create some lasting memories that can be looked on for a lifetime to come.

Here are some good tips to help make your sitting go smoothly, and for you to get the most out of your photo session.

1. Make sure you book your session as early as you can. In the event you are booking a family session, then its important to know well in advance that everyone is able to make the date and time.
2. Your photographer should take you through your session outlining the length of time you will have, and what sort of pictures you can expect.
3. Think through exactly the type of photos you would like to have captured. This could be a mix of family, individual and couple shots. This helps the photographer plan out the session a little in advance.
4. Try and colour co-ordinate your clothes. For example, try to keep a theme of colour or pattern throughout. It is always best to keep away from too many patterns in different colours, as it will make the pictures look very busy, especially if there are a lot of you in the shots.
5. Strong colours can look great against a white back drop so do not be afraid to go for bright shades. They can also look great on children as children can sometimes be pale skinned and the colour can lift their complexions. Lilac tends to add a grey tone to a complexion, so unless you or your child has olive skin tones then it may be best to go for a stronger purple, or even another colour. If you have any doubts on this topic, simply ask the photographer in advance for their advice.
6. Make sure that you bring a change of clothes with you. This can be a great way to break for a moment and re-group.
7. Also, bring a brush or comb, and some spare make-up to freshen up if necessary.
8. If you have any favourite toys that your children love, then bring those along. They can help keep the little ones occupied, and they also can look great in photographs.
9. In the event there is anything you may not like about yourself, please speak up before you get going, so the photographer can ensure you do not get any pictures of you in that way.
10. Above all, make sure you stay as relaxed about the whole thing as possible. It is up to the photographer to engage you, and to keep you and the children interested and having fun.

Follow these tips, plus ensure you hire the right photographer for you, and those family portraits will create a lifetime of lasting memories.
