Believe it or not photography has been with us for the best part of two centuries. If you see photographs from the mid-nineteenth century in a museum and compare them with the sophisticated computer images that have become popular today, it is astounding how this science has developed. The early photographers drew their inspiration from the portrait painters whom have been plying their trade for hundreds of years. Their pioneer portrait photographs are characterized by stiff poses since their subjects had to sit or stand still for a long time while the photograph was taken. Interestingly enough portrait photos have remained very popular right up to the present day although now these pictures can be taken instantly with a digital camera.

The American Civil War played a crucial role in the development of photography by introducing the idea of photographing current events. The appearance of illustrated newspapers represented another key stage in the process with the emergence of the newspaper photographer who is so familiar to today’s newspaper readership. It is hard to image what newspapers would look like without photos! The Internet news sites that have sprouted in the last few years are even more dependent on the use of photos to get across their message.

It is also worth bearing in mind that until the 1920’s the camera was the preserve of the professional photographer and the wealthy. Only with the mass production of cameras, in particular by the Kodak company, did photography come within the reach of the average man or woman on the street. Progress has continued with the recent replacement of manual cameras with digital cameras. The digital camera allows everyone to take quality photographs and share them with family and friends in email and over the Internet.

There are also even throwaway cameras that you often find on sale in vacation resorts. So even if you are one of the few people who do not own a camera of their own, and don’t have the money or interest to buy one, you can still buy a cardboard throwaway camera for next to nothing. Thus you can easily take your holiday pictures, get them developed and throw away the camera!

While the vast majority of photographers are satisfied to take family and event photos, for others photography becomes an important hobby or source of livelihood.
