Creative Ideas For Protecting Your Camera at the Beach
Posted July 16th, 2010
If you’re on vacation and want to get good pictures, you’re often left in a quandry about your camera equipment. Do you take your expensive gear with you or leave it behind and use some cheap underwater camera instead? There are many arguments on both sides of this discussion. I fall in the camp that believes you should take your good equipment, that’s why you have it. Good cameras will take far better pictures and you can’t get the moment back. However, you want to protect that expensive gear as much as possible. If your camera isn’t already waterproof, or resistant to damage from sand, you’ll want to do something to keep it water and sand free. And don’t forget, you need to keep it safe from thieves as well. Here are several tips for various situations. 1. While on the beach, dig a small hole to hold your camera bag, and cover it with your towel. Watch it fairly closely while swimming. If done discreetly no one will know its there. 2. If you need it in the water, cover it with an Aquapac water proof casing. This will allow you to use your regular camera underwater. Test it in the bathtub with tissue paper first, so you know the bag is secure. 3. Put your gear in the most boring bag possible, nothing that screams “expensive camera equipment inside”! A waterproof picnic bag with your stuff inside wrapped in socks or towels would be a good way to disguise the contents. If you get creative you can find all sorts of ways to keep you gear safe and also usable while on your vacation. Have fun! The author likes to write about a variety of beach related topics including such things as patio umbrella covers and plastic adirondack chairs.
