Quality Video Photographer - What You Must Look Out For

Posted July 14th, 2009

In the western world many people have their own video cameras which they use to film family celebrations and outings and other events of interest to them. Most do not proceed beyond the basic user level but the fact that they know how to point the camera and get some results can lead them to underestimate what is required to be a professional videographer. A look at a few of the factors they need to take into account may increase their appreciation for the man or woman filming their wedding and understand why this service is not always as cheap as might be expected.

Before the videographer starts filming they need to have acquired sufficient knowledge to get the video equipment best suited for performing their job. Understandably the quality of lens is directly linked to the results that are going to be obtained. For example, for a video of a wedding it should be more than sufficient to bring a lens with an optical zoom of 10 times, but if you are called in to film a fast moving sports event and need to get close-ups of the athletes from a distance, an optical zoom of 20 times or more is appropriate.

One of the best known and most irritating problems associated with videos is camera shake. Even if the videographer believes that their hand is so steady that they need not be concerned over unwelcome camera movement, in truth it is almost impossible to free yourself of this problem without purchasing a video camera with image stabilization. It is a good idea to consult the expert staff of a photography shop about which cameras give the highest degree of image stabilization.

Before buying their camera the professional videographer will usually test it to see the level of image stabilization it delivers and other factors that can critically impact on the quality of their work. For example, weddings are frequently held in churches where light quality can be notoriously poor. Not all video cameras perform well in low light conditions and until the camera is tested it is hard to know how effectively it operates in such conditions.

Another factor of obvious important is the lifetime of the video camera batteries. The disappointment of having the batteries fade while filming an important family occasion are well know to many of us, but while for the family member this can be embarrassing for the person who makes his living from videos the consequences are that much more serious. Therefore the maximum time for continuous recording should be verified and if possible how stopping and starting filming are going to affect this times ought to be ascertained.
