Taking a Good Photograph of a Shiny Photograph

Posted October 27th, 2009

Photography is a brilliant hobby to be interested in, and with the onset of digital photography its popularity has grown immensely. It is now quite common for the average household to have a digital camera. Digital cameras are also created so that they automatically try and take the best quality picture possible.

However there is a frequent problem, and this is when people try taking a photograph of a very shiny object like glass, chrome or porcelain objects or items like jewellery. Taking such a photo with a standard camera usually results in the light source showing up very clearly on the end product, resulting in a poor quality photo.

To solve this problem, professional photographers invest in very expensive equipment and lighting set-ups which avoid these problems since there is no need to simulate false light via the camera’s built-in flash. However this can be very expensive - ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of pounds. Below are some tips on how you can avoid this at home, without needing to purchase a photography studio!

1) Turn off your camera’s built in flash, and instead use another method to light the object up. The problem with the built in flash is that it creates a strong and localized light focused around a particular point. However this then means that the flash will reflect off of the shiny object you are trying to photograph. Instead try turning off your cameras flash and using a lamp to light up your object as necessary.

2) Come up with a way to diffuse the lighting. What this usually involves is placing a white sheet between the light source (i.e. a lamp or bulb) and the object you are photographing. This will soften the light, resulting in less reflection when you take the photo.

3) If you are regularly requiring to take photographs of shiny objects, you may need to purchase a Cloud Dome if the above methods don’t work. This is a white dome on which you place the object. Due to its shape and colour, it will diffuse most of the light source - reducing the chance that the light ends up reflecting off of the object you are taking a photograph of.
