Posted August 22nd, 2010
When one is in the field of Photography and they extend themselves to service weddings, there are some extremely important responsibilities to the role. The top importance being, getting to the wedding on time as a photographer, though there are others so insure success. It is essential for photographers to plan in advance to know the area and any delays which may come between them and getting to events. Many times a wedding will be held in a separate location to the reception. Every wedding is different and solid communication with the bridal representative as to what is expected is essential. Depending upon the agreed terms some weddings with have the formal photos of wedding party and family taken at the ceremony location or the rehearsal area. It is up to photographers to ensure that they are present and ready for party to ensure that the schedule flows smoothly. The urgency is that weddings cannot be done over, so careful planning and allowing extra time is a key priority. Making contact with the tourism board for the area to see if there should be any special events planned such as parades, construction, or road closures of the route in question is a great idea to know in advance of what may stand in the way. There is bound to be much equipment needed for photo sets; lighting, batteries, film, back drops, memory sticks, etc. Making sure everything is packed and ready the night before is great planning. Batteries, extension cords, and memory sticks are a few items that really need to have a great emphasis on them. It is wise to ensure that there is a backup plan for photos to be taken indoors somewhere should the weather not be agreeable for outdoor photos. The responsibility will be shouldered by the photographer to make sure what ever is necessary is set up in a timely manner. The last thing a bride and groom need to be worried about on the special day is that their day will go as previously planned. Often time’s weddings are special gatherings that friends and family that have not been seen in a while will make special plans to attend. With that said, ensuring that they have ample photos to recapture the special moments is the most important part of the event, when it is all said and done. Some photographers may choose to have an assistant or more to help ensure that the event goes off without any glitches. This may even be necessary depending upon the size of the wedding. Creating a breakdown of set up responsibilities is often helpful. Arriving for the wedding on time as a photographer has many elements of importance. There is much to be accountable for and in event that they come into disruption and not make it to the special event, will ultimately ruin one of the most precious times in a couple’s life. In some cases, it could also prove to be the end of a career. Tom Ely is Head of Photography for Atmosferik.
